How to get the most out of sandbox games

Sandbox games can be extremely fun. Having a whole map to do what you want is something that just a few years ago was unthinkable, but now, there are countless games from different genres that offer that exact experience.

It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about tycoon games or adventure fighters such as the latest Spider-Man title… Sandbox games offer the player an endless array of mechanics to put into practice in a seemingly open map.

There’s one huge problem that some of these games have, though. They can become repetitive -and even tedious- if you run out of things to do. Thankfully, there are easy work arounds for such issues. Let’s go into further detail!

If there are any objectives… DO THEM!

Sure, playing a sandbox game carefree can be extremely exciting at first. You might even get to a point where you feel that doing missions is unnecessary, and you’ll completely ignore them. We’ll give you a tip: DON’T. Even in park building sims such as the new Jurassic World or even classic games like SimCity, you’ll want to do the objectives as they present themselves.
Completing them will give you something to work for, which in turn extends the total amount of time that you’ll end up having fun while playing the game.

Set some goals for yourself

If you’ve already completed the entire game and sandbox is all that’s left… There are still many things that you can do. Give yourself some objectives – say, if you’re playing Cities Skyline, try turning your city into an industrial monster, or create a district revolving around gambling and casinos. That’s the beauty of a sandbox game – you can set goals for yourself and do them as you please.
Tycoon games are ideally made to take an approach like this one. In fact, those tycoon games which come with a built-in campaign and mission system tend to allow extended hours of gameplay within said missions – even after completing them. Take Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, for example. That game allows and even encourages that approach.

Play with your friends

Finally… Play with your friends! Even if the game doesn’t have online features, you could have way more fun if you compete with your friends to see who does best at the game. If you’re playing a tycoon game, challenge them to see who ends up with the best enterprise. As we said, possibilities are endless – you just have to know what to do!
